Pergamon
Capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon, this once powerful ancient Greek city played a crucial role in the development of both education and medicine. The Library at Pergamon is said to have housed over 200,000 volumes, which were allegedly given as a gift from Mark Antony, to Cleopatra after their wedding. The term ‘parchment’ was also first used here, as an alternate source to papyrus. Pergamon is referenced in the Book of Revelations as one of the seven churches of Asia. The Altar of Zeus, and Asklepieion can also be found here. It dates as far back as 300 BC.
